Painting Ideas to Make A Room Look Bigger.

December 2, 2019  |  Interior Painting

1. Light Paint

Creating a larger looking room has a lot to do with the color of paint you use. You could paint a small room a dark color in order to make it feel more cozy, but if you want the opposite, light and bright will be your best friend. Light colors are a great option because they are more reflective, making the room feel open and airy. The best colors we suggest going for are:

White – The most basic color is also the best for making your tiny rooms seem bigger. Another great reason to choose white is because you can decorate with any other color without it clashing with your walls. According to ‘Flip This House’ host Than Merrill, “White will make any room appear bigger and complement the natural lighting.” However, with messy kids and pets, if white scares you too much, opt for a light cream color.

Citrus Tones – Yellow is another great color we suggest for tiny rooms because it is also very reflective. Yellow can definitely be a scary color- you don’t want your room to be labeled the “Mac and Cheese Room”-but opting for a shade similar to dandelions, banana, or a creamy yellow will work best. A yellow room will also look great with a bunch of white furniture and accent pieces.

Blues/Greens – If white is too plain and yellow is too much for you, a sea-foam green or soft teal may be a great option. Because humans perceive blues and greens as being receding, it creates an illusion of distance which in turn makes your room look bigger.

2. Paint the Ceiling

If you do plan to go for white walls, but still want that pop of color, try painting the ceiling! When people walk in, it’s the first thing they will notice and it will draw their eye upwards creating the illusion of a larger room.

3. Pick Similar Tones

When you finally decide on a color for your walls, try to make the rest of the details in the room a different color from the same family. Those details can be anything from the trim, to the pictures on the wall, to the furniture. When you start decorating using similar tones of furniture and decor, the extra pieces will blend together seamlessly and be less obtrusive to the eye.

4. Stripes

Have you ever heard you should never buy clothes with horizontal stripes because it will make you look “wide”? Well stripes are perfect to elongate your room. You should go for vertical stripes if you want your ceilings to look higher, and horizontal stripes to make your room seem more wide. You can play around with the size of your stripes as well as the colors, which is a great way to bring more personalization to the room.

5. Use Quality Paint

The type of paint you use will make a huge difference when it comes to making your room look larger. Cheap paint that is low quality usually looks chalky when finished, which can make your room look smaller. You should also go for a paint that has some type of shine to it. You don’t need to pick extra glossy paint but going for a subtle shine such as “eggshell” or “satin” is just enough to have light reflect off the paint.

6. Keep it Simple

You can pick the lightest and brightest paint for the walls but at the end of the day it’s all about the overall Feng Shui of the room. If you have tons of patterns, furniture, and knick knacks lying around, the room will feel small no matter how bright the walls are. Try to limit the amount of clutter in there. Instead of 10 pictures on the wall, make some of them mirrors which can also create an illusion of a larger room. You can also go for transparent furniture such as coffee tables or chairs, so your eye movement is not disrupted by bulky pieces.
